In the winter of 1886-87, during his stay in Paris, Vincent van Gogh bought 660 Japanese prints at the art gallery of Siegfried Bing. His aim was to start dealing in them, but the exhibition he organized in the cafe-restaurant Le Tambourin was a total failure. However, he was now able to study his collection at ease and in close-up, and he gradually became captivated by their colourful, cheerful and unusual imagery. When he left for Arles, he took some prints with him, but the core remained in Paris with his brother Theo. Although some prints were later given away, the collection did not disperse. Hamilton James Constable. A Portrait
John Constable, the revolutionary nineteenth-century painter of the landscapes and skies of southern England, is Britain's best-loved but perhaps least understood artist. His paintings reflect visions of landscape that shocked and perplexed his contemporaries: attentive to detail, spontaneous in gesture, brave in their use of colour. Posters of the Revolutionary Era
This Russian Museum exhibition catalogue publishes much more than the anthologized propaganda posters of other survey books. The curators and authors have selected works that show how the propaganda poster evolved as an independent genre both in subject and style. The earliest examples follow the conventions of popular prints (lubki) and folk tale imagery of the tsarist period - images often tell a story with satirical and grotesque depictions of enemies. Prevalent in the early examples is a realism akin to nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art. In the early 1920s a more modern and spare form of poster art drew on experiments of the avant-garde to create new styles.
